The Battle of Broughton [British snobs get their panties in a bunch over Google Street View]
BBC News dot.life blog, April 03, 2009; 14:00 GMT |
"Paul Jacobs spotted a Google Street View car in his village. ...
He and a neighbour John Holmes rushed out of their homes to confront the driver. A short while later -
after an amicable chat with the man from Street View - the car left this quiet village outside Milton Keynes.
It appeared that Broughton could rest easy, with no prospect of cameras shoving their lenses where they're not wanted
and invading the privacy of this quiet backwater. ...
Two days later, I'm here with a large BBC satellite truck and a cameraman - and at least two other camera crews have been spotted in the
village this morning. The village was also featured in the local papers yesterday and much of the national press this morning.
So how private is this place now?" |
As I write this,
panoramio.com only has two pictures from Broughton. They look so lonely; if anyone finds themselves near
Broughton, I'd encourage you to
take plenty of pictures of the local architecture and upload them to panoramio.com so they have some company. I'd especially be interested
to see the architecture of Paul Jacobs' and John Holmes' (I wonder if he's any relation to
Johnny Wadd) homes. You can also upload the pictures to the Ordnance Survey-sponsored geograph website. You may also want to visit the Broughton, Kettering, Northampton, UK village website. You can even check out the property details in the village using the Northamptonshire County's interactive mapping tool (most seem to be ACORN categories "Comfortably Off" or "Wealthy Achievers"). CNN's report quotes Jacobs as saying, "This is an affluent area. We've already had three burglaries locally in the past six weeks. If our houses are plastered all over Google it's an invitation for more criminals to strike. I was determined to make a stand, so I called the police." Seems like a more rational and productive response would be to organize a local Neighbourhood Watch-type program. |

Cops for sale? How could that possibly lead to abuse? |
Driver tosses 69 speeding tickets [incurred within 5 months] East Valley Tribune August 11, 2006 |
"She told police she threw the tickets away because she thought nothing would happen to her. " |
So speeding tickets are just free scratch paper police like to hand out? |
| FOX News August 09, 2006 | "A man riding a personal watercraft on the Suwannee River was injured
after a 4-foot-long sturgeon jumped out of the water and hit him...[the man] was knocked unconscious." |
An unusual ending for the usual fish tale--"I'm telling you, that fish was
this [with arms spread widely] big..." |
